Winter Nature Activities for Preschoolers

EXPLORING NATURE WITH CHILDREN

I’m so thankful I get to spend time with my children for their Preschool/Kindergarten years. These early years are so precious. First, I share examples of our nature studies with Exploring Nature Curriculum with Children. Keep reading to find out how we explore nature during the Winter! Finally, at the bottom, we list our favorite supplies for the Preschool/Kindergarten years.

WINTER BIRDS

In December, we studied winter birds with Exploring Nature Curriculum with Children. Almost daily, we pull out our Nature Anatomy book and use it as a lovely learning resource. We also LOVE these sandpaper letters for early letter formation and writing skills! They are so affordable to beautiful in their simplicity.

I have been wanting to collect some field guides, and we finally picked up a few at Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center. I choose the following guides since I felt they would get us started off on the right foot: Texas Wildflowers, Birds of Central Texas, and Owls of North America.

Finally, we read through Owl Moon. Have you read this story? If you haven’t, I highly suggest it! The last page in the book is so sweet:

“When you go owling
you don’t need words
or warm
or anything but hope.
That’s what Pa says.
The kind of hope
that flies
on silent wings
under a shining
Owl Moon.”

Winter Birds
Winter Birds

We also created bird’s nests from play dough and used some old string and feathers and twigs from the yard.

Also pictured are two other highly recommended books that we read regularly: Albert and A Nest is Noisy.

Winter Bird's Nest
Winter Bird’s Nest

Albert is a sweet story about birds who build a nest in Albert’s hands and help him overcome his fears. It is beautifully illustrated by Jim LaMarche.

Winter Bird's Nest

Now that my oldest is five, he is beginning to want to practice handwriting. I’m super gentle with their learning since I feel that is best for the littlest of children. I’m grateful for these letter worksheets from simplylearningkids.

Finally, we read through Are You My Mother? My little ones created another nest made from play dough and I loved when they added in eggs. Its such a joy to see their creativity come alive from play, good books, and nature! Here is the link to these lovely letters again! sandpaper letters

WINTER SKY

Since we don’t have much snow in Texas, the boys don’t often experience what I would consider a true Winter. My husband and I talk often about taking them to a colder place in the Winter sometime so they can experience snowflakes and nature in wintertime.

To explore the Winter sky, we used coffee filters to make snowflake shapes, and also read the Snowy Day and Nature Anatomy again to look at different snowflake shapes.

Winter Snowflakes

Then, we read this sweet book called Snowmen at Night. I think its perfect for preschoolers since it seems like the boys enjoy to have this book read aloud often!

WINTER MOON

Once again, we utilized the Nature Anatomy books and these sandpaper letters . Seriously, we use them almost daily!!!

Winter Moon

First, I drew in pencil the phases of the moon and then I invited my oldest to watercolor the picture however he wanted. I love his close attention to detail.

We also added in gluten free oreos into the study of the phases of the moon! The boys LOVED this part of course!

WINTER TREE STUDY

The Exploring Nature with Children curriculum is so lovely written. She states:

“Winter can be a very interesting time to observe trees. Their beautiful silhouettes stretch across the  winter sky line, revealing their shapes more clearly in the absence of leaves.”

My littlest one (age three) painted a tree from the Perfect Christmas Tree. Oh my goodness…this is SUCH a sweet story to read at Christmas time! You know a good book when it stirs your emotions and brings you to tears! This book was recommended from the Peaceful Preschool curriculum, which we use to gently introduce letters to the boys.

Winter Tree Study
Winter Tree Study

We have very loosely kept a nature journal. I tried my hand at drawing an evergreen with John Muir Law’s drawing tutorials, and my son wanted to draw a tree right next to mine! So sweet. I love his creations.

Then, we collected twigs and branches from outside in the yard and read this LOVELY book of nature winter poems.

Winter Trees

We also read Winter Trees and painted using our tree branches.

Again, we used our Nature Anatomy book again to identify different kinds of bark. We also wound twine around some branches. The boys had fun figuring out how to wind the string around the tree!

Little Tree is another sweet story that shows the seasons nicely. Its a sweet story of a little tree who is afraid of change. Also, I love the illustrations by Loren Long.

CANDLEMAS WEEK

This beeswax candle making kit is so affordable, simple, and my boys LOVE to make candles. The boys also played with the letters beads and used their fine motor skills to string them on pipe cleaner.

EARTHWORM STUDY

Next, we read about earthworms and they colored in a picture of an earthworm that I drew. We briefly discussed the anatomy of an earthworm. I don’t focus on much detail at this point…I just let them observe as much as they can on their own.

Then, my boys had fun using play dough to form earth worms. We enjoy this natural play dough for playing, and forming letters.

Winter Earthworms
Winter Earthworms

I was completely shocked to see my oldest want to copy this poem that comes in the curriculum. Once he was finished, I didn’t pressure him to keep going. This is considered copywork and its AMAZING handwriting/language arts practice!

Exploring Nature with Children also has a Guided Journal and its so lovely! We have used it many times, though I can easily seeing using it weekly as the boys grow! The copywork pictured below came from the Guided Journal!

THE PEACEFUL PRESCHOOL

We currently follow the Peaceful Preschool curriculum by Jennifer Pepito and we love it! The content is full of rich literature, therefore it is a perfect fit for my book-loving family.  We read through many rich, classic stories. We also complete playful projects to go with the literature theme or letter. Download Unit A for free to try it out with your littles to see if you like it.

The community she has created is such a beautiful resource and I’m grateful to be a part of it. Jennifer has included a wonderful preschool e-book which helps you prepare to guide your child in early learning. We have found her curriculum perfect for our homeschool preschool. The curriculum is comprised of Read Aloud, Phonics, Counting Skills, Fine Motor Skills, Large Motor Skills, Practical Life Skills, and Art Skills. Also, here is how we enjoyed the letter A unit. Feel free to explore all of our letter units!

LETTER L REVIEW

The focus books for letter L are The Grouchy Ladybug and the Corinthians Love Chapter from the Bible. Our favorite children’s Bible is the Jesus Storybook Bible. I also added Ten Little Ladybugs since my youngest really loves this story and its great for counting. Then, we read the Lion and the Mouse by Jerry Pinkney, which is a beautiful, imaginative picture book and a great fable. Finally, we read through Locomotive, by Brian Floca and The Little Tree.

First, we created glitter glue letters. The Peaceful Preschool recommends glitter glue in order to create the finishing touches on sensory, alphabet flashcards. We have used them with all of the letters so far. My children are always excited to make a new glitter glue letter.

L IS FOR LADYBUG

We read The Grouchy Ladybug many times. It is a beautiful book which is part of the Peaceful Preschool curriculum. We used this small wooden clock to introduce the principles of telling time since the book highlights the different times of the day as the grouchy ladybug moves from one animal to the next. This book was a regular during our introduction of Letter L.

Ladybug

Then, we revisited Ten Little Ladybugs. There are 3D ladybugs which the boys love to run their fingers over as I’m reading the pages. The beautiful rhyming words are simple. The boys loved foreshadowing the next number. In the story, the ladybugs are counted down from ten to none (and are returned to home).

We used Simply Learning Kids resources for Letter L and found the letters with a cute ladybug free printable.

L IS FOR LOVE

We were lucky that our Letter L unit fell around the same time as Valentine’s Day for us. We made some simple homemade cards for the boy’s Daddy and traced the word “Love” with our sandpaper letters.

Since it was Valentine’s Day, my older son signed Valentine’s cards and we made homemade chocolate candies to share with our friends.

Finally, we read 1 Corinthians 13 which is the Love Chapter from the Complete Illustrated Children’s Bible.

L IS FOR LEMON

I asked my children to make their glitter glue Letter L’s and we looked up a recipe for homemade limonada in Nature Anatomy. I just love these Montessori moveable letters too! We bring them out for every letter unit.

We squeezed fresh lemon juice, honey, water, ice and fresh mint for a refreshing drink.

We also made these lemon pomanders, which is just pressing whole cloves into lemons. My boys were having a difficult time so we ended up using toothpicks to make the holes first, and then sticking the cloves inside the fruit. We also really love these sandpaper letters and they are very affordable!

ABC BOOK

This sweet ABC book, Adventures with Barefoot Creatures, also introduces the concept of the seasons and a calendar. I just love the whimsical illustrations too!

LETTER K REVIEW

The focus books for letter K are A Kiss for Little Bear and The Emperor and the Kite. I also added  Katy No Pocket since we all cherish read aloud time, and I already had the story from my childhood on hand. We also read Katy and the Big Snow, which was not a suggested book on the curriculum, but one we all enjoy very much. Finally, we read through B is for Bear, a beautiful nature alphabet book, however, any alphabet book would be perfect to review your letters. Chicka Chicka Boom Boom is another one of our favorite alphabet books to read together.

First, we created glitter glue letters. The Peaceful Preschool recommends glitter glue in order to create the finishing touches on sensory, alphabet flashcards. We have used them with all of the letters so far. My children are always excited to make a new glitter glue letter.

K IS FOR KISS

Do your kiddos love to kiss and hug you? My youngest especially loves to be affectionate to us, and we are  grateful for his little personality. I already had  A Kiss for Little Bear from my childhood and we read this book together a few times throughout the week. We love the illustrations and drawings in the sweet story.

A Kiss for Little Bear
A Kiss for Little Bear

We gathered animals from around the house that were in the story and drew a picture to give to our family (which is something Little Bear is working on in the story).

K IS FOR KINGDOM

The Peaceful Preschool recommends to read through “My Kingdom” by Robert Louis Stevenson but since my littles are just three and five, they didn’t want to still to listen to the poem very well! I’m trying to be better about reading short poems but so far, they aren’t that interested in the. I know this is something we need to work on! So, we moved onto the next activity!

ALPHABET BOOKS

Our favorite alphabet books so far are: Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, Eating the Alphabet, the Usborne Alphabet Picture Book, and my favorites are B is for Bear and Animalia. The Peaceful Preschool curriculum often recommends to review an alphabet book once during the week with your littles so its nice to have a few different options to read through.

COUNTING PRACTICE

So far, my boys have done math almost all organically. We may randomly ask, “if you have three and you add four, how many does that make?” and they both will answer. They are doing simple addition and subtraction without much prompting from us. So because of this, I don’t take them through a formal math curriculum just yet.

For the first time the other day, I put it into a story problem form: “If I have four red balls, and I give away two red balls, how many red balls do I have left?” Big pause…and they my oldest said, “two red balls?” I can’t tell you how thrilled I am to witness their learning.

AUDITORY NUMBER SEQUENCES

We covered up three random numbers with a kitchen towel, and the boys took turns remembering the numbers in the order under the towel. We worked up to four numbers.

These small wooden number cards have been fun to practice with. I really love how this curriculum seems to pull from different styles of education: Charlotte Mason, Montessori and Waldorf because it makes a lot of sense to me to pull from different learning styles. These are Montessori numbers and we have enjoyed taking them out every now and then to practice numbers.

PHONICS PRACTICE

Once again, since I had Katy No-Pocket from my childhood, we read this book during our letter K unit. My boys love the sweet story which is about a kangaroo mama who doesn’t have a pouch to hold her Joey son.

Also, we brought out all of the upper and lower case tactile letters we have worked on so far (A-K). These particular letters in the photo below, have probably been our most used so far! They are inexpensive, sturdy, and tactile so the boys can practice tracing the letters. I highly recommend them!

First, we shuffled all of the letters so they were out of order. Then, the boys took turns drawing one and then making the sound of the letter. If they got it right, they drew an action card. After I read the action word, they got to do the action. I believe they could have played this game for much longer had I had enough stamina to keep going!

K IS FOR KATY

Have you read the Virginia Lee Burton books? I feel like everything I have read from her has been such a gem! This story, Katy and the Big Snow, is perfect for my construction-loving boys. They want to know about all of the details on the page (and there is quite a bit of detail)! They want to know all about the tractor and its various tools. My oldest son selected these left over paints from an older art project and after I drew Katy, he colored her in.

K IS FOR KITE

I found a simple construction paper kite template on Pinterest and my sons glued the kite, string, letter K, and bow pieces together. My oldest son decided he wanted to add more bows to the string so he independently cut more bows out and glued them onto the string to finish the kite project.

We colored in our large letter K template with chalk pastels (another one of my son’s favorites medium choices)!

I drew a shape of a kite on printer paper and card stock, and the boys watercolored them in. I love how everyone came up with something a little different!

K IS FOR THE EMPEROR AND THE KITE

The Emperor and the Kite is such a beautiful book. I was so inspired by the beautiful colors and illustrations. I love how it exposes the kiddos to a new culture.

Looking back over our letter K studies, I realized we heavily focused on art projects! I used these beautiful oil pastels to create the kite from the story. We mixed washable black tempura paints with dish soap to paint over the entire painting.

My youngest son had fun paining over it in black. Then, we let the paint dry for the rest of the day. Finally, we took a quarter and scratched through to reveal the kite picture below. LETTER J REVIEW

Its so exciting to discover a new letter together! The focus books for letter J are The Giant Jam Sandwich and Sheep in a Jeep. We also added  Jack and the Beanstalk since we all love reading, and I already had a few different older versions from my childhood on hand. Finally, we read the Jesus Storybook Bible  Jonah and the Whale story.

GLITTER GLUE LETTERS

Next, we created glitter glue letters. The Peaceful Preschool recommends glitter glue in order to create the finishing touches on sensory, alphabet flashcards. We have used them with all of the letters so far. It is really one of my children’s favorite parts.

My parents gave the boys some Glitter Markers so they were eager for this letter to try them out.  Typically, however, we use the glitter glue as mentioned above for this activity since it is recommended by the Peaceful Preschool.

J IS FOR JEEP

For our first book, we read Sheep in a Jeep. The boys liked this book because it is simple with lots of rhyming words. After reading it through the first time, we read through it a few more times, and they took turns finishing the sentences!

I found a tutorial on You Tube on how to draw a simple jeep. We each drew a jeep on these watercolor postcards we had left over from my older son’s art birthday party. My older son did an excellent job drawing out his jeep, although he got frustrated with some of the process, so he made a second drawing.

Jeep Drawing

My youngest son LOVES these oil pastels so I thought he would be interested in coloring in the jeep I drew with them. When he finishes up a picture, he loves to rub his fingers all over the chalk or oil drawing. We have so much fun using our hands to create and learn!

COUNTING

Since we were focusing on a jeep/car theme, we gathered toy cars from around the house. Next, the boys sorted them by color, and matched them with their corresponding number cards. My youngest loves to trace the numbers and letters with his fingers, and my oldest also sorted them by size!

J IS FOR JONAH

We LOVE Jesus and the Storybook Bible. Next to Nature Anatomy, it is probably one of our most well-read books. My boys love manipulating the play dough. Since I try hard to keep natural materials for our children to play with, I usually purchase natural options or make our own. We purchased this lovely wooden play dough set more than a year ago and it has had lots of use! I love how it comes with some lavender and chamomile calming herbs to enhance the senses.

Jonah and the Whale

We also brought out some sea creature cookie cutters we used in our letter F unit  to go along with the Jonah and the Whale study. The boys took turns making sea creatures from modeling clay.

LETTER J WRITING PRACTICE

I saw this idea from my friend on Instagram. She traced over this letter board so we just had to try it too! The boys were delighted to see the letters show up on the paper because they are beautiful! My oldest son is interested in handwriting and therefore we practice handwriting often in the car. I love using these mini chalkboards because they are convenient, a great size, and come in their own pouch for easy clean up!

J IS FOR JAM

We make it a priority to eat nourishing foods, so when I found this lovely wildberry jam at Whole Foods that contains no sugar I was super excited! The boys spread it on gluten free toast on their own and made a delicious snack to enjoy while we read through the Giant Jam Sandwich.

We were able to check this book out, from our local library. It was a big hit because it was also the audio version. We read through this story about 15 times. The boys didn’t want to take the book back to the library since they loved it so much! If you have never read this book, I highly recommend it!

HOMEMADE ICE CREAM

ICE CREAM – LICK HONEST ICE CREAM VISIT

Finally, we visited our favorite ice cream spot: Lick Honest Ice Cream. I love going here for an occasional treat because they offer delicious vegan ice cream made with coconut milk.

Then, for their dairy versions, they source milk from local dairy farms who feed their cows primarily grass. We try for whole milk, grass fed dairy options we can! Another sneaky trick about this place is they offer a hot pink ice cream which my boys love and the flavor is Beet Mint! I love how adventurous my little eaters are.

BALANCE BEAM – LARGE MOTOR SKILLS

Then, we found an old board lying around and some left over brick when our house was built. The boys helped me create a balance beam and then took turns using it!

I IS FOR INCH WORM

Have you read Inch by Inch by Leo Lionni before? It is a quick read and I love the illustrations and focus on nature. It is a sweet story of a clever inch worm who is requested to measure different birds. After reading the story, we collected some of the boys toys and measured how long they were.

ALPHABET PRACTICE

I love these beautiful sandpaper alphabet cards and they are pretty inexpensive. Its really nice to have the boys trace these with their fingers to practice pre writing skills. My youngest especially loves to practice writing this way! We also used play dough to form letters. I think my oldest made A, B,  and C before moving onto another activity.

I IS FOR ICING

Finally, during this time of letter I study, we celebrated my oldest’s fifth birthday. I made homemade sweets for his little party. We made a healthy cocoa sweet potato icing since it was delicious, nutritious and easy! If you are interested in learning more about clean eating, check out my wellness mamas post here.

Over the last six years, we have found some wonderful children’s items. I wanted to share some of them with you!

This post includes a list of some of our favorite things. Hopefully, this inspires you with some Christmas gift ideas! I start with gifts for baby, learning toys, gifts for nature loving kids, nature book ideas, and finish with gifts for mama. Many of these items we have and love, and many are on our wish list! Most items included have a nature or natural theme since that is one of the things we value and cherish.

GIFT IDEAS FOR BABY

Baby Gifts
Baby Gifts
  1. Organic Muslin Swaddle Blanket – We had similar blankets for the boys when they were babies and LOVE them. I almost always try to give this as a gift to my mama to be friends. They are super soft, organic and so versatile. They are large enough that you can swaddle babies and use them as the children grow! My boys continue to seek their blankets in cold weather.
  2. TinyTot Wooden Balance Bike and Tricycle – This is so adorable. It is so beautiful! I would have purchased one of these for my boys in their younger years if I had seen it! This seems to be a great price for a balance bike.
  3. Nature Wooden Mini Puzzles – These are super cute and perfect for little fingers.
  4. Natural Wooden Baby Teether – These are super cute and so important when baby wants to explore by putting objects in their mouth.
  5. Baby/Toddler Bamboo Spoons – I didn’t include these on the picture above, but these are so adorable. Its great when you can find perfect feeding spoons for the first couple of years!

GIFT IDEAS FOR LEARNING

LEARNING TOYS
LEARNING TOYS
  1. Wooden Xylophone – I’m not sure about your children, but my children would LOVE this toy! Last Christmas, we purchased them a mini piano and drum set and they STILL love to play on them! Children can learn so much from music, songs, and learning to play an instrument.
  2. PlanToys Wooden Bee Hive – This is so adorable and great for learning! Children can count, recognize colors, make patterns, and work on fine motor skills with this fun toy!
  3. Hape Alphabet Learning Puzzle – We have a colorful wooden alphabet puzzle but I have always been interested in this one. It seems this year, Hape has reduced the price quite a bit! If I we didn’t already have a wooden alphabet, we would snatch this up.
  4. Oil Pastels – I had to include these here too. My youngest son (age three) especially loves making art with these!

Here is a helpful list of our favorite, well-used Preschool Supplies.

GIFT IDEAS FOR NATURE LOVING KIDDOS

  1. Dead Sea Bath Salts CALM – Anything that evokes a warm, CALM, bath captures my attention. One of my favorite self-care indulgences is a long slow soak in the bath. Fall Nature Activities for Preschoolers

Fall Nature Activities for Preschoolers

I’m so grateful to have found Exploring Nature with Children, ENWC, to use for the past year with my preschoolers because it has been perfect. Included are forty-eight weeks of nature study; four weeks for each month of the year, organized by season. I have loved using ENWC for Fall Nature Activities for my Preschoolers because we have gained so much from this program.

I’m so thankful I get to spend time with my children for their preschool years. First, I share our Exploring Nature curriculum choices and why we use them. Keep reading to find out how we explore nature during the Fall! Finally, at the bottom, we list our favorite supplies for the preschool years.

SEED STUDY

First, we gathered seeds from the yard. Then, we read The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle. My oldest son LOVES art! He used watercolors to paint in the flower I drew from the story. We use these watercolors almost daily and LOVE them! They have lasted a long time, and the boys really enjoy using them.

MAKING SEED BOMBS

We created seed bombs at home and with our sweet preschool co-op group. I found an easy tutorial on Pinterest on how to make the seed bombs. We used seed packets, water, potting soil, and air-dry clay.

This activity was so simple. We love to get our hands dirty. I can’t wait for Spring to see the flowers pop up!

COLLECTING NATURE TREASURES

Next, we discussed seed dispersal and used leftover egg cartons to house our nature treasures. My boys use egg cartons frequently now to store their findings!

We also read A Seed is Sleepy by Diana Aston. The books in this series are all absolutely stunning because they provide beautiful imagery. The boys had fun using a magnifying glass for the first time to observe their treasures up close!

Finally, we read through From Seed to Plant. Although this was an informative book, my boys were not attentive to this book. Perhaps as they get a little older, they will be more interested in it!

APPLE STUDY

Since it was Fall, we also explored apples. My boys practiced kitchen skills by slicing the apples, and removing and counting the seeds. Then, we painted an apple template using the sliced apple and tempera paints.

APPLE BOOKS

We read through the following books and these were all EXCELLENT:

I think our favorite book was the Apple Tree’s Discovery because it has such a neat story!

Since I’m a lover of sweets, we then made this simple vegan apple crisp recipe. This recipe is simple, pretty clean, and my family loves it, so we have made it several times!

BEE STUDY

Next, we explored and learned about honey bees. This was a fun lesson! I highly recommend Are You a Bee? I also highly recommend making homemade beeswax candles! To this day, my boys still get excited to light a candle that they helped create!

Of course, since my boys seem to love being creative with art, they colored in the honey bees I drew from them in their nature journals. We also made a bee card from cardstock, used our Nature Anatomy book to draw a bee, and read the Honeybee Man many times throughout the week!

FARM VISIT

In October, we visited Johnson’s Backyard Gardens for an open house event. When we first arrived, we took a tractor tour of the farm! Next, we completed a nature scavenger hunt searching for leaves, spider webs, birds, mini beasts and signs of bugs.

LEAF STUDY

I try to begin and end the month reading a short and sweet poem from a beautiful book called Be Blest. I highly recommend this book. It is very inexpensive too! This is something extra I have tried to add to our exploring nature curriculum study.

OCTOBER
OCTOBER

First, we used Nature Anatomy to study leaf characteristics. This book has been such a huge resource to us, I highly recommend you check it out! We collected as many leaves as we could (there is not much variety on our property which mostly consists of cedar and oak trees). My boys had fun painting the leaves and making art with them.

LEAF PAINTING

We read through many stories, and really enjoyed We’re Going on a Leaf Hunt. We have also read his other cute story We’re going on a Bear Hunt and it is one of my three year old son’s favorite books.

PUMPKIN STUDY

Perhaps our favorite Fall study was exploring Pumpkins! Since it is so useful, we used our Nature Anatomy book again to draw and paint pumpkins and squash. We read through Pumpkin Town more times than I can count over the week.

Fall Activities for Preschoolers

Next, my children painted mini pumpkins. Then, we made clean pumpkin energy balls with just a few ingredients. Prior to making the balls, we carved a pumpkin together, explored the seeds and pulp, and cooked the pumpkins to make homemade pumpkin puree, which was used to make the pumpkin energy balls.

  • The Peaceful Preschool – The schedule is amazing because it sets aside one day per week for field trips
  • Exploring Nature with Children – This works well for my family because it is centered around being outdoors (HINT: If you click on this link, make sure to click the “Preview” button!)
  • Ambleside Online – In my extensive Charlotte Mason research, I have decided ultimately to draw upon Ambleside Online as our basis homeschool preschool curriculum.

LETTER H REVIEW

We began the letter H unit and had so much fun with it! The focus books for letter H are The Little House, The Little Red Hen, and Harold and the Purple Crayon. Also, we read through B is for Bear, a beautiful nature alphabet book, however, any alphabet book would be perfect to review your letters.

Then, we created glitter glue letters. The Peaceful Preschool recommends glitter glue in order to create the finishing touches on sensory, alphabet flashcards. We have used them with all of the letters so far. It is really one of my children’s favorite parts.

H IS FOR THE LITTLE HOUSE

One of my favorite childhood books was The Little House by Virginia Lee Burton. I’m so thankful to be able to share this beautiful story with my children. For those who haven’t read it yet, its a sweet story about a house in the country who is filled generation after generation. Eventually, a city grows around the little house, there are no more inhabitants, and the house is abandoned. Its such a great book so I hope you check it out!

LETTER H HOUSE

Both boys created a letter H house and I love seeing their unique creativity blossom through art projects. We also found an additional house book called The Old House at the library.

LITTLE HOUSE DRAWINGS

My children no longer take naps so I LOVE to do a quiet activity such as art after lunchtime. Their creativity really shines and Mama can get some work done around the house.

These chalk pastels have been a favorite of ours. They make beautiful pictures and are so fun to use. My youngest son picks this art medium to use most frequently because its so sensory. He usually ends the art project by rubbing his fingers all over the painting to spread the color around.

little house art

My oldest son chose watercolors to create a little house. He usually asks me to draw an outline so he can paint or color it in. By far, these are our favorite watercolors to use, and they are affordable too! I’m so thankful for this wonderful opportunity to observe my children’s first learning.

LINCOLN LOG LITTLE HOUSE

Finally, my children constructed a log cabin out of Lincoln logs. They added a horse barn and created lots of rooms inside for play. This story has sparked several discussions about moving our house from the country to the city. I hope you read the story with a beautiful ending.

NATURE FINDS

Next, since we use Exploring Nature with Children, we gathered nature treasures from our yard. In the hill country of Texas, we mostly have cedar trees so we were able to see the colorful change happening to the leaves that had fallen off the trees. We sorted our nature finds and counted them.

I love to read a seasonal poem for the change of the months. Be Blest: A Celebration of Seasons is a beautiful story with a poem and lovely illustrations for each month. We typically begin and end the month reading from this book.

leaves

Then, we read the Little Red Hen from my childhood and also this version from Paul Galdone. I have heard my children act out the Little Red Hen story numerous times over the last couple of weeks. I found some felt at Michael’s for a few dollars and they helped me cut out the characters and use them to tell the story back to me.

H IS FOR HEN

Keeping with the hen theme for letter H, I found several hen books at the library. Henny Penny is another great classic story about a hen who thinks the sky is falling. Hedgie’s Surprise is a cute story about a hen who wants to be a mother hen and a hedgehog named Hedgie who helps her. Finally, Hattie and the Fox is a simple barnyard story that my children love to retell to me.

H IS FOR HONEY

We read through Are You a Bee? I loved this book so much that I can easily see purchasing more by the same author and illustrator.

We made bee cards on white card stock using our Nature Anatomy book as a template for the bee. Finally, we made homemade beeswax candles which were a great purchase. This was my children’s first experience with candles. I think it was also one of their favorite crafts we have made together.

Next, we read the Honeybee Man and drew an outline of a bee. My children are three and four, so normally I draw an outline for them, and they color it in. I love to provide choices of different art options and witnessing which ones they choose. These oil pastels are a great favorite of ours!

H IS FOR HORSE

Then, we read through The Girl Who Loved Wild Horses. Another story I read growing up, it was great to read it to my children. We used a q tip to watercolor our horse templates from Simply Learning.

G IS FOR GO DOG GO

Then, we created a dog party with our lego pieces and read through Go Dog Go many times. I’m thankful my parents held onto many of my childhood books, this being one of them. The day after they created this, my eldest found more dogs which he then added into the party fun!

G IS FOR GORILLA

My youngest LOVES Goodnight Gorilla. It is truly one of his favorite stories. When we get to the page in the book that is completely black, and the zoo keeper’s wife eyes are open, my boys laugh hysterically. This is such a simple book, they have it memorized. I love how this book could teach colors, patterns, observing clues, and how it encourages the imagination.

We love to paint with watercolors and they loved designing a zoo for their animals to play in.

ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES

G IS FOR GARDEN

Next, we read through Eating the Alphabet, a wonderful ABC book. We are two weeks into Exploring Nature with Children so we connected some of our gardening theme of seeds and mini beasts in this week! So, we gathered seeds from the yard and painted a picture from the Tiny Seed. I love art work because my children become so focused. It is the perfect activity when we need to wind down or find some quiet time too.

Nature Anatomy by Julia Rothman has been such a great resource! Typically, I do an outline of what we are studying in pencil in their notebooks, and the boys watercolor in what they choose. However, sometimes they do it all on their own.

FUTURE GARDEN

We are also ambitious to make a larger garden this year. My boys took a trip with me to the Natural Gardener and we purchased some vegetable seeds. They are itching to plant them!

LETTER B REVIEW

The letter B unit was fun! First, we read through Blueberries for Sal. I love this story because it is so beautiful. My children bring this to me over and over to read aloud. They especially love to hear me read the “kerplink, kerplunk” sounds in the story. We also created letter B glitter glue letters. The Peaceful Preschool recommends glitter glue in order to create the finishing touches on sensory, alphabet flashcards. We have used them with all of the letters so far. It is really one of my children’s favorite parts.

B IS FOR BLUEBERRY

We counted a variety of berries and also sorted them (and of course ate them along the way).

Did you know blueberries are a wonderful superfood? According to an article on healthline.com, “blueberries are among the most nutrient dense berries.” They contain a level of antioxidants which may help reduce cancer risk. My children love blueberries and as a result, we usually have berries around to eat and enjoy!

ACTIVITIES

My children created process art with a watercolor of the ocean and we also read the Runaway Bunny. I loved this story as a child! We made letter B bunny art with cotton balls.

HOMEMADE PALEO CARROT CAKE CUPCAKES

Then, we made homemade paleo carrot cake cupcakes. You can find the recipe here. For the frosting, I tried a new mascarpone whipped frosting and it was light and perfect. My children helped gather the ingredients, wash and peel the carrots, stir the ingredients, and lick the bowl when we were finished!

FIELD TRIPS

The Peaceful Preschool recommends a field trip day each week. Since our boys are at home for preschool, we have the luxury of taking many trips! We visited Blue Butterfly Farms and learned about farm animals and gardening and we also took a beautiful hike with friends from a Wild and Free group.

We picked fresh strawberries at Sweet Berry Farms. Since we had so many berries, we came home and made homemade strawberry jam.

We smelled bluebonnets at Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center. We visit it often because it is one of my favorite places.

ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES

Simplylearningkids offers free extension activities for the curriculum. We made symmetry butterfly art from simplylearningkids which turned out more beautiful than I expected. The boys painted on one side. Next, we folded the paper in half. Then, we opened it to discover a beautiful butterfly.

Finally, I read the Biggest Bear, Be Blest and The Three Bears to my children because these are beautiful stories. The Biggest Bear is a loving story about a boy and his bear and it was great to find another beautiful bear book to add. Be Blest is a great resource because it goes through the seasons and has beautiful illustrations. The Three Bears is a wonderful and classic children’s story and it is a great delight to include it again. In the Jesus Storybook Bible, we read the creation story. We try to read a chapter most mornings from this beautiful book. I LOVE this Bible version because the illustrations hold my kiddos attention.
