HOMESCHOOL FIRST GRADE SUPPLIES
My children are at home for preschool and first grade. I enjoy keeping them close, and because I love learning and teaching, this is a good fit for our family. While you don’t need a ton of materials to get started teaching your children, there are some key homeschool first grade supplies that are very useful to have on hand. I love online shopping on Amazon because it is so convenient, especially when you have littles. I like to click on items we need, and then click on “Save it for Later” because it will save in my Amazon cart. Then, when financially possible, I move it to my cart so we can purchase what we need!
Find a yearly planner you love to use because you will use it often. I like the ones without dates because you can customize it to fit your needs. We use A Charlotte Mason curriculum philosophy since it has been amazing for us! I can’t wait to share with you some lovely lessons we are moving through, since they have been so fun and filled with learning for my family. You can also read all of my posts on ‘A Charlotte Mason Subject Lessons.’ Additionally, I use these schedule cards and curriculum templates to help organize our year.

ARTS AND CRAFTS SUPPLIES
We mostly spend our time together, reading classic books, playing outdoors, and playing with art! I value nature outings, a minimal home atmosphere, and quality children’s toys and materials. However, it can be expensive to choose quality! Therefore, we include both quality items and affordable items when we choose our homeschool supplies. My boys love to freely draw with the oil pastels and usually make a big mess. I don’t mind the mess since they are creative!
- Colored Pencils
- Chalk Pastels
- Wooden Paint Holder
- Paint Brushes
- Paint Brush Kit
- Watercolor Travel Palette
- Mixed Media Journal
- Blank Notebook
- 30 Watercolor Paint Tubes
- Oil Pastels
- Composition Notebook
These are perhaps our most used items; sometimes they are used daily!
- Alphabet Manipulatives
- Wooden Letters
- Alphabet Flashcards
- Mini Travel Chalkboards
- Tactile Letters
- Sand Tray
- Magnetic Black Chalkboard with Chalk Tray
OPTIONAL SUPPLIES FOR LEARNING
We purchased our wooden calendar fromJennifer Etsy shop since it is adorable. This may be one of the most expensive purchases yet, however it is such a great and beautiful learning resource. We enjoy talking about change of seasons, months, weeks and days with this beautiful resource. We also bought the small wooden clock and this wooden alphabet tracing board. I could purchase one of each item from their shop since they are so beautiful and well made. I also purchased the nature themed play dough set from the Montessorirestore shop for my son’s birthday. This was a great resource because my children could play with this for hours daily. They also use the play dough to form letters and also reinforce concepts from the stories they are hearing.

FAVORITE FIRST GRADE BOOKS
The books listed below are ones that my son loves because he is always disappointed when its time to move onto a different subject. It makes me so grateful to have found such living and amazing books to share with my children as they learn. The most surprising thing I think was when I discovered they enjoy poetry!
- Children of Foreign Lands
- Lief the Lucky
- A Child’s Garden of Verses
- Tommy Smith’s Animals
- The Apache Indians
- Aesop’s Fables
- Grimm’s Fairy Tales
BOOKS FOR MAMA

- For the Children’s Sake
- The Dirt Cure
- Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life
- Home Education: Volume 1
- Home Education: Volume 2
- Home Education: Volume 3
Finally, while there are many great resources for curriculum, these are the ones that work best for our family. It is easy for me to get overwhelmed because there are so many good choices, therefore, I wanted to share what we love.
FIRST GRADE CURRICULUM
I could have gone with a boxed curriculum set, however, I felt I could tailor it more specifically for my children and their education. Since I can connect with other like minded mamas who have gone before me, I can find great living books, and work through our issues as we begin our home education. The resources listed below offer such a wealth of information and research, so I’m thankful to share them with you.
